May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

In 2015, in cooperation with friend, author, and counselor, Katherine McIntyre, I illustrated "How Frederick Found His Light", a children's book geared toward kids grades K - 4 experiencing depression and similar mental health crises.This book was a passion project created after the loss of a childhood friend to depression.

Having had my own struggles with above average anxiety throughout the years, mental health is a topic that I know is an important one and unfortunately, often difficult to talk about due to stigma.

It was a fairly daunting project on a short deadline, with 30 pages of content due in a span of about a month and a half. It was a learning experience from start to finish, not to mention cathartic, and while I would love to revisit the work with my current skillset, not a bad first swing.

It's a project that I am happy to have been a part of and if it has helped even one kid navigate a tough time, I think it was well worth the work.

Here's a pretty special thing. I had the pleasure of joining 74 artists in drawing 274 characters from the worlds of Jim Henson, for the #greatmuppetmural , a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Jim Henson fan site, Toughpigs.com.

The endgame of this project is amazing, featuring the work of crazy talented fans, some of my favorite illustrators, & some bonefide pros from within the worlds of Jim Henson. I contributed two pieces, a couple of Sesame Street Honkers, and Rosita Monster.

You can find them and learn more about the project at Toughpigs.com/tpmural. There will also be a few other features on the site, highlighting the individual pieces and their artists, in the coming days.

Being even a small part of the project has been a real privilege and a great experience. I've always been uneasy about sharing my work, but I know I'd have been kicking myself had I seen what this thing became and not been a part of it. Beyond a renewed creative drive, seeing it completed brought me a real lift in what has been a pretty rough year.

I have been a member of Toughpigs for literally my entire adult life. There are a particular handful of folks, birds of a feather who shared a particular sense of humor, that would become the first "online" friends I would ever meet in person, who are now double decade old friendships.

I've visited them in Chicago, Philly, and New York, and they've hit me up on visits to Madison from Minnesota, Illinois, Georgia and more. Two years ago, I even got to tour the art department of the Sesame Workshop through one of those friendships, a real thrill for such a diehard fan.

Thanks to @danny_horn for starting the site and forum all those years ago, @toughpigsjoe, @meryanroe and all of the other regular contributors for keeping it running, and to @jvcarroll4 , @thekennydurkin and @davehulteen for directing this behemoth work of art. It's been a real joy to be part of. And of course, the rest of the @toughpigs community. Happy 20th Buddies!
